How to Stop Cemetery Flowers From Blowing Away

There is a unique kind of heartbreak in visiting a loved one’s memorial, only to find the tribute you placed with such care has been swept away by the wind or scattered across the lawn.

Australian cemeteries are often wide-open spaces with high wind exposure. Without trees or buildings to break the gusts, a standard florist arrangement simply isn’t heavy enough to stay put. While fresh flowers eventually wilt, artificial flowers are light and act like sails in the wind.

However, because faux blooms don’t require water, we have a structural advantage. We can permanently weight the vessel. Here is the definitive guide to anchoring your tribute.

1. The DIY Anchor Method

The most common mistake people make is relying on the flowers themselves to hold the vase down. To combat Australian winds, you need to lower the center of gravity of your container.

If you are building your own arrangement, do not use soil (which gets light when dry). Instead, fill the bottom 30% to 40% of your vase or pot with heavy density material. Aquarium gravel, small river stones, or even builders’ sand are ideal choices. This creates a heavy base that makes it nearly impossible for the wind to tip the pot over.

2. The Friction Fit

Once your weight is in place, you need to secure the stems. Loose stems will be pulled out one by one in a storm. The solution is dry floral foam (styrofoam), but the fit must be exact.

Cut your block of foam slightly larger than the opening of your pot. You want to have to force it in. This “friction fit” ensures that even if the pot tips over, the foam block won’t pop out. The foam should sit snugly directly on top of your gravel layer.

3. The Secret Weapon (Glue)

This is the step most professional florists use, but most families miss. Pushing a stem into foam isn’t enough for long-term durability. Over time, the wind wiggles the stem, creating a loose hole.

To fix this, use a hot glue gun or clear silicone. Dip the tip of every stem into the glue before inserting it into the foam. When the glue sets, it creates a permanent bond. The wind may blow the petals, but it will not be able to pull the stem free.

4. The “No-Hassle” Alternative: Pre-Weighted Pots

Does the process of buying gravel, cutting foam, and hot-gluing stems sound like a lot of work? We understand. When you are grieving or busy, you want a tribute that is beautiful and secure, without the DIY project.

At Gifts After Life, we have solved this problem for you.
