Flower Etiquette: The Numbers Game

Is sending 12 roses romantic or reckless? Why do florists prefer groups of three? We decode the secret language of numbers to ensure your floral tribute says exactly what you mean.

When purchasing flowers, most of us focus entirely on the variety or the colour. We agonise over Pink vs. Red Roses, or Lilies vs. Orchids. However, in the language of flowers (floriography), the number of stems you choose carries as much weight as the flower itself.

Sending the wrong number can inadvertently change a message from “I Love You” to “I’m Sorry,” or in some cultures, shift a celebration into a funeral tribute.

The Great Cultural Divide: Odd vs. Even

Before we count the stems, we must address the most significant rule in global floral etiquette: the difference between Odd and Even numbers.

⚠️ The Golden Rule for European & Slavic Cultures

In many Eastern European countries (such as Russia, Ukraine, Poland, and Romania), Even Numbers (2, 4, 6, 8…) are strictly reserved for Funerals and Sympathy. It is believed that even numbers represent a “completed” cycle—the end of life and closure.

Conversely, Odd Numbers (1, 3, 5, 7…) represent life, imbalance, and motion. They are for the living. Giving an even number of flowers to a living person in these cultures is often seen as a bad omen.

The Western Exception:
In Western cultures (Australia, UK, USA), this rule is less strict. In fact, the “Dozen” (12) is the ultimate standard for romantic roses. However, for mixed bouquets, professional florists still follow the “Rule of Odds” for aesthetic reasons.

Rose Numerology: Decoding the Count

Nowhere is the number game more specific than with Roses. Here is the definitive guide:

Stems The Hidden Message
1 Stem “You are the one” or Love at first sight.
2 Stems Mutual love and affection. Engagement.
3 Stems “I – Love – You.” (One stem for each word).
6 Stems “I want to be yours.” (Infatuation).
9 Stems Eternal Love. A wish to be together forever.
10 Stems “You are perfection.”
12 Stems The Dozen. “Be Mine.” The ultimate romantic declaration.
13 Stems Friends Forever. (Or Secret Admirer).
15 Stems “I am sorry.” The apology number.
24 Stems “I am entirely yours.” Surrender.
99 Stems “I will love you until the day I die.”
108 Stems “Will you marry me?”

The Florist’s Secret: The Rule of Odds

Have you ever noticed that a group of 3 vases looks better than 2? This is the Rule of Odds.

The human eye loves odd numbers (3, 5, 7). Even numbers create a static, symmetrical image that the eye scans quickly and forgets. Odd numbers force the eye to move around the arrangement, creating visual interest and life. Our Tip: Unless sending a specific Rose Count, always buy stems in groups of 3 or 5.

Memorial Etiquette Tip

Funeral Tributes often break the “Rule of Odds.” Large casket sprays often use even numbers or symmetry to represent balance, calm, and rest. However, hand-tied sheaves often follow the Rule of Odds to appear natural and “garden-gathered.”
